President's Message

At the November 3rd Board Meeting, Betsey Hoage and Tina Hanson from LAPL met with us to discuss an agenda of “issues” regarding how Platt Friends and LAPL can improve communications and relations.

Betsey is the Assistant Director of Branches for LAPL, and Tina is the acting West Valley Area Manager. Earlier, we had given them a list of fifteen issues for discussion. These ranged through how Friends groups are perceived by LAPL, guidelines for allocating FOPL funds for purchases of library materials, improving cooperation and Friends/Staff working relations, establishing a volunteer plaque, and improving security in and around the library.

While the meeting was worthwhile to air the issues, it is hard to say what has actually been done so far. Several of the issues were taken “under advisement,” and we have yet to hear what the response will be. It appears as though our proposal to establish a volunteer plaque is at least being considered. Also, there is now a better link from the LAPL website to Friends Groups’ sites (see article in Friends News). Our request to have security cameras installed was denied, but we have asked for reconsideration.

We had a good turnout for the November Board Meeting. FOPL members and the public are always welcome. Meetings start promptly at 7 pm, usually on the first Monday of the month.

Meanwhile…

Thanks to Program Chair Frona DeCovnick and the author of Under the Blue Dome, Elma Hovanessian, for an outstanding November General Meeting program.

Thanks also to Lyall Thompson for organizing and coordinating our 4th Annual Children's Boutique in December. Lyall is one hands-on Fundraising VP: you could see her crochet hook flashing on gifts throughout the November meetings. And her involvement paid off. We had a record turnout and record sales. We're also indebted to the West Hills Recorder Consort for delighting adults in the library while the youngsters shopped.

Upcoming Events

Next month, February 19, Jaye Howes(chairman of the SFV Chapter of the 99’s—International Organization of Women Pilots) will speak on Women in Aviation at our February General Meeting. Please note that the program will begin at 7:00 pm, a half-hour earlier than usual. Don't miss a minute of this first-rate speaker's take on womanned flight.

The Board and I all hope you had especially happy holidays and are entering a peaceful, prosperous new year. We're looking forward to seeing you again at the January Book Sale, or in the Bookstore, or round and about the library.

Terry Haney, President
