President's Message

With months as filled with events and special projects as October and November have been, can many, many thanks be far behind?

Special thanks go to Program Chairman Frona DeCovnick for her efforts in putting together our very successful three-part Voter Information Series. All sessions were distinctively different, informative, and well attended. Thanks also are due Hospitality Chairman Ellie Haney and the volunteer caterers who added the Friends touch to the data, debate, and discussion. That was a lot of work, but well worth the effort. Mary Ann Ostrom, our Fundraising VP, deserves a hand for the delicious Platt Night at the Pizza Cookery November 7 (which raised $95 for the library) and for coordinating the talents of Children's Boutique gift-creators. Don't miss the pay-off of those weeks of work: the Boutique itself on December 7. And again—with the October Book Sale drawing over $2800 and the Friends Bookstore increasing in popularity every week—Bookstore Manager Shel Schuster, Volunteer Coordinator Elaine Corman, and the volunteers who dedicate hundreds of hours to sorting and selling books have earned a rousing round of applause.

Behind the Scenes

We have well over 100 volunteers involved in a variety of activities around the Library: Bookstore, Book Sales, Grandparents and Books (GAB), Shelving, Special Programs, etc. etc. Behind the scenes, there are some volunteers that we never see who deserve recognition.

For December, we would like to recognize Ed Berger, Jesse Goldbaum, and Ted Haas for their efforts every weekend to help keep the outside cleaned up and in tip-top shape. Parks and Recreation Department has that assignment, but for whatever reason it doesn't always get done. Thanks Ed, Jesse and Ted for all your efforts.

Frequently Asked Question: What does the Board do?

Besides getting thanked for shepherding projects, the Board oversees the governing of the non-profit Corporation, Friends of the Platt Library. The Board meets monthly on the first Monday, and all meetings are open to the public. Currently, the Board consists of six elected officers, plus eleven appointed members serving as heads of various standing committees. The organization's principal function is to raise funds to provide the library with items that cannot be purchased from the library budget. The Board also sponsors special programs of cultural value. Last fiscal year the Friends gave over $35,000 to support library programs. If you'd like an active part in accomplishing future goals, please join us.

Season's Greetings

The holidays are upon us, so to all who do so much we wish you the very best in this holiday season. We hope that families and friends can get together and enjoy each other in the spirit of this time of celebration. And a very Happy New Year to all!

Terry Haney
