Last April, the Los Angeles Public Library held a citywide bookmark contest to celebrate National Library Week. Each of the 67 branches chose two winners in the ages 4 to 7 and 8 to 11 categories; then ten grand prize winners were selected from among those finalists. And when the results were announced at the L. A. Kid’s Read Festival on June 30, Mallin Alter, age 9, a fourth grader at Viewpoint Calabasas, found herself among the talented ten who received a $200 savings bond and will have their winning entries published as official LAPL bookmarks. Congratulations to a very proficient young artist, Mallin!
Recent area branch closings have pushed Platt Branch Library circulation to record levels. Before the arrival of additional staff, and during the summer holiday period, approximately 100 teenagers volunteered at the Library, putting in an excess of 1000 hours.
Any kid in the area who wanted to help was welcomed, and it was a win/win situation for those who participated. Platt Branch Library received a massive book re-shelving effort. The teens gained an opportunity to contribute in their community, which they grasped with gusto.
Thanks to all of you — great effort!
