It's Happened: More Parking! Better Access!

Victory exit Parking extension entrance Platt exit

Shel Schuster's done it again! As of June 15, 2001, Platt Library patrons got 20 additional parking spaces and can exit through the new lot onto either Victory or Platt. Visiting the library no longer entails fender-bender anxiety and the protracted maneuvering required to turn around in the old lot. It's a vast improvement.

Many thanks are due to Los Angeles's new City Controller, Laura Chick, and County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky. Through their support and the efforts of their staffs, the County granted permission to use the creek easement, and all the leveling, construction, paving, painting, and landscaping got done.

Laura Chick, now City Controller, presents lemons to Shel Schuster, Bookstore Manager, as a symbol of "lemons being turned into lemonade" through his persistent efforts in securing the Platt Branch parking lot expansion.

However, as then-Councilwoman Chick noted at the Friends May 30 General Membership Meeting (where she presented a Certificate of Merit and pitcher full of lemons to Shel), it had been some three-and-a-half years since the City Council agreed Platt's parking situation had to be corrected. Without Shel Schuster's boundless coaxing and kvetching, the ground never would have been broken, much less paved and painted. He truly deserves lots of credit.

In appreciation, the Friends Board bought Shel a couple of carts so he could work even harder on the bookstore and book sales that are the envy of libraries throughout the LAPL system.

A suggestion to those of you who find the new facilities more convenient: A verbal thanks to Shel as you see him working around Platt (or a note dropped off in the bookstore) would be a nice way to say "We like it! Thanks for caring, Shel!"

For that matter, a note of your appreciation also to Laura Chick, City Controller, Zev Yaroslavsky, County Supervisor, and/or the Los Angeles Library Commission would go a long way toward showing library administration how very valuable such projects are to the library and community members.

Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

The June 15-16 book sale, our last for the 2000-2001 membership year, scored another great success. Lots and lots of books went home with lots and lots of bargain hunters. Total receipts were just short of $2500 - the third highest ever.

So many great titles. So little time.

A great crew, as always, was on hand to help make this happen. Many thanks to Pat Backes, Millie Berger, Eileen Bernfeld, Ruth & Warren Bromund, Elaine Corman, Sandi Corman, Patricia Dant, Frona & Stan DeCovnick, Vivian Estabrook, Jesse Goldbaum, Ted Haas, Terry Haney, Paul Kennedy, Leatha King, Jeff Koetje, Barbara Littlefield, Ellen Marshall, Ruth Mehlworm, CeCe Mestman, Charlene Montante, Eileen O'Neill, Mary Ann Ostrom, John Reeve, Peggy Richman, Alden Rollins, Paula Russo, Don Schuster, Shel Schuster, Harriet Strauss, and Nina Wilson.

Also, appreciation is due those who gave up sleeping in on a Sunday morning to help sort out a burgeoning collection of books. Thanks again Millie Berger, Pam Bieber, Warren Bromund, Elaine Corman, Sid Eiduson, Jesse Goldbaum, Ted Haas, Terry Haney, Therese Hearn, David Perrell, Nancy & John Reeve, Don & Sharon & Shel Schuster, and Harriet Strauss.

Thanks, also, to our wonderful bookstore volunteers, who keep the doors open six days a week, 52 weeks a year.

We hope more of you will join us in the bookstore and helping at book sales. Our first book sale of the 2001-2002 membership year is September 7 (Friend's members) and September 8. It's your library, and it's gratifying to share in its success.
