A Message From Jan

On behalf of the Platt Branch Staff, I extend a warm welcome to library patrons joining us as a result of the closing of the Woodland Hills Branch. We hope the interim time with us will be pleasant.

Woodland Hills patrons will see a couple of familiar faces: Nancy Brennan, Children’s Librarian, and Frieda Singer, Messenger Clerk. Both have been assigned to help us for the next year and a half.

I am also pleased to welcome two permanent staff members recently transferred from nearby branches. Alicia Steffin, Library Assistant, comes to Platt from Canoga Park and Bruce Silver, Clerk Typist, from Encino-Tarzana.

Hopefully, the additional staff will help reduce the lengthy check in/check out line. However, during the closure of Woodland Hills Branch, circulation will be burdened to a greater degree. I encourage all to use the self-check out equipment whenever possible.

L.A. Kids Read Bookmark Winners

Jan Metzler congratulates winning artists Nivetha Sundar (left) and Charissa Kim…and their proud mothers, Abby Sundar and Suzanne Kim.

Two very talented and special young ladies had their bookmark entries selected to represent Platt Branch Library in the recent L. A. Kids Read Bookmark Contest. Nivetha Sundar, a second grader from Hamlin Street School, was our winner in the Age 4 to 7 category. Charissa Kim, a third grader from Lockhurst Elementary, won in the Age 8 to 11 category.

Selected from 169 entries, their designs were forwarded to the citywide finals. The winners for the entire city will be announced at the June 30 Summer Festival Kick-off. Grand Prize entries will be printed as official L.A. Public Library Bookmarks and distributed to the public citywide.

Charissa and Nivetha have already won tee shirts. Now they hope to win the coveted $200 savings bonds awarded to Grand Prize winners in each age category. We're all wishing you good luck, girls!

More Parking! Better Access!

Thanks to the perseverance of Shel Schuster, you can now go out the back way and...

turn left to Victory...

or turn right to Platt.

Either way, there is extra parking and you avoid the traffic jams at the entrance.
