Plans are going forward for the Children's Boutique that will be held Saturday, December 1 from 12 noon to 2:30. There will be many new and interesting items for sale, all made or selected by a team of Friends elves. Children will be able to purchase Christmas and Hanukkah gifts ranging in price from 25¢ to $3.00 for their family and friends. Only children will be invited in for shopping (secrets are kept from parents that day!); however, there will be many volunteers to assist children as they shop and to help them gift-wrap their purchases. Parents waiting for their children can enjoy holiday music performed by the West Hills Recorder Consort.
A note to crafting volunteers: You will receive project directions and materials beginning in September. All who want to be included in sewing or crocheting projects, please contact me soon. Final craft sessions will be held on two Saturdays, October 13, from 10am–1pm, and November 3, from 1–4pm, in the Multipurpose Room.
The Platt Library has received a gift of $4,645.20 from the BUM 1998 Trust to be used for library materials. The Trust was created by Bea Blondell, Ursula Scarrow, and Mary Van Houten. The three women lived together in the San Fernando Valley. When Mary Van Houten died, their library was offered to a number of libraries, but others could not accept their very large donation. Thanks to the Friends volunteers who sort donated books at Platt Branch, the donation was accepted here.
Some books from the collection were sold by the Trust, and the proceeds ($4645.20) were given to Platt Branch “for their kindness in accepting the books,” said Trustee Kathryn E. Van Houten.
The Friends of the Platt Library are happy to help those that need or want to donate books. It is always a “win-win-win” solution. Those donating remove unneeded books (and receive a tax benefit), the community can buy used books at very reasonable prices, and Platt Library uses the proceeds to enhance the library collection.
Hi there! It's that time of the year again! The 2008 Entertainment Books are in the Bookstore now through December 31, 2007. San Fernando Valley area books are $20 each. I can get you a book for anyplace in the country as well. Just call me to order always-appropriate holiday gifts for far-away friends.
This year, we have an additional perk. Buyers can register with Entertainment Books, Inc. and, for each book purchased, receive green-coded coupons (called vacation coupons) worth $9.95 that can be used at all participating vendors, locally as well as on vacation. Platt Friends, as the seller, will receive the same discount coupon per book sold, which could be used for such items as Platt Branch office supplies and children's craft materials. In effect, each book will cost only half as much, and that half will help defray your library's operating expenses. Two great perks!
In addition, the Friends will receive a $10 per book bonus for every book sold over our initial 68-book quota. Since your library is the final benefactor, please, everyone, get on the wagon. Let's see if we can make this a banner year!
